| The Day Before Surgery |
| |
After your surgery has been scheduled, a registered nurse will call you to review your prior
medical history (including current medications, vitamins and herbal products) for preoperative
planning with your physician. Contact Lakes Surgery Center at 248.896.6300 the day before your
surgery between 2 pm and 5 pm to verify your arrival and surgery times. If your surgery is
scheduled for a Monday or the day after a holiday, please call on the last business day prior to the
surgery.

- DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery, including water juice, coffee, chewing gum, mints, etc.
- DO NOT drink alcoholic beverages or take recreational drugs 48 hours prior to surgery.
- DO NOT smoke before or after your surgery.
- DO NOT take aspirin products for one week before and after surgery unless otherwise instructed by your physician. This includes Aspirin, Motrin, Naproxen, Advil, Excedrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen. You can, however, take Tylenol or Acetaminophen.
- Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes that will not bind your surgery site.
- Leave jewelry, watches and other valuables at home.
- Bring your Drivers License, insurance card and/or expected payment (when appropriate), as well as any advanced directive, healthcare power of attorney or applicable guardianship papers. Please also bring a list of medications that you are currently taking.
- Prostheses, contact lenses, hearing aids, etc. will be removed before entering the operating room. Bring along reading glasses and appropriate storage containers for these items.
- All jewelry, body piercings, wigs, hairpins and makeup must be removed prior to surgery.
- DO NOT use lotions, gels, hairspray, cologne, perfume, deodorant or powders the day of surgery.
- Make arrangements to have a responsible adult/driver accompany you to the Surgery Center and back home after surgery. Guests must stay at the Surgery Center the entire time of surgery.
- If your surgery necessitates general anesthesia, please make arrangements to have a responsible adult stay with you for 24 hours following surgery.
- All minors must be accompanied by a responsible guardian. The responsible guardian must remain on the Surgery Center premises at all times.
- Notify your physician of any change in your physical condition, such as a cold, fever, sore throat, rash or flu.
